A little piece of history

Thanks to my buddy Fred for the guest post!

There was a celebration recently of harry truman‘s 100th birthday in Independence, Missouri. We set our ADThome security alarm and headed there for a day of fun. One of the places we visited was the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum.

There are two main buildings. One is a two-story brick home that was provided for the County Marshal. There is also a cell block jail. A brick addition was added in 1903 for the housing of prisoners used in the chain-gang.

The jail housed many prisoners when it was active. Southern sympathizers were housed there during the War Between the States. A lot of those prisoners were women and children. Sometimes as many as 20 people were incarcerated in these cells that were meant for only two people at a time.

One very famous person had been a prisoner in the jail. His name was Frank James. Frank is Jesse James’ older brother. He was treated very differently from the other prisoners. Friends furnished his cell and he enjoyed an enormous amount of freedom in the jail and home. He even ate with the Marshal’s family.

We got to tour the Marshal’s home and the jail. You get to see how they lived back in those days because most of it is set up as it would have been during that time. There is also a room with memorabilia and information. It was a very interesting and educational experience.
