A little bit about Diane.
Diane Trautman is a native Texan, born in a small West Texas town, and moved with her family to Houston while still an infant. She attended Houston ISD public schools and early on, displayed leadership skills in organizing family events, taking care of her smaller brothers and sister, and working part time to earn her way to college.
Diane was greatly influenced by both of her parents. Her father, a World War II veteran and retired chemical worker at Ethyl Corporation, taught her to respect his core values: hard work, honesty, and integrity. Her mother placed a high value on education and educators and the importance of the role both play in American society—her dream was for her daughter to become a teacher.
Diane went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Houston. She was among the first students to receive a doctoral degree in education from Sam Houston State University’s Educational Leadership program. She has been involved with hands-on education for over 25 years.
Prior to her educational career, she worked in the Trust Asset Management division of Texas Commerce Bank and also in energy lending at First City National Bank where she met her husband, Tim, a geologist for Anadarko Petroleum. One morning while working at the bank in 1985, she read a headline in the Houston Chronicle, “HISD To Start the Year 3000 Teachers Short.” She wanted to do something where she could truly make a difference in someone’s life and began her journey to make a difference in the lives of children and improve the educational system in Texas. Diane began her educational career as an English teacher to middle school students at Patrick Henry Middle School in Houston ISD and later to Humble High School students in Humble ISD.
After receiving her principal’s certification from Stephen F. Austin State University, Diane moved into administration at Moorhead Junior High School in Conroe ISD as an assistant principal. Diane obtained her doctorate in educational leadership at Sam Houston State University while she was in Conroe ISD and was recognized for her outstanding achievements as an administrator, receiving the TASSP Region 6 Outstanding Middle School Assistant Principal award in 2000.
Diane left her position in Conroe to take over the principalship of Tomball Junior High School in Tomball ISD. She would draw upon all she had learned at her previous schools about diversity, high expectations, business and parent relationships, and leadership as she assumed her new position leading a staff of 110 and a school of 1,300 students. She worked diligently with students, staff, parents, and the community to provide a quality education for all of her students. The collaborative efforts by all involved were rewarded when her school was featured in Texas Monthly magazine, winning the highest rating of five stars in the “Just-4-the-Kids” public school evaluation issue.
After her success in Tomball ISD, Diane moved into higher education and accepted the post of assistant professor in education administration for Stephen F. Austin State University teaching ethics and leadership courses preparing teachers to become public school administrators. While there, her students encouraged her to run for state representative in 2006 to make a difference for educators.
Diane now wants to make a difference in public education for the future of her grandchildren, and she hopes to put all she has learned during her 25 years in education to use as a member of the Harris County Board of Education.
Diane lives with her husband, Tim, in the Kingwood/Atascocita area where they have resided for the past 27 years, and they have three grown children and two grandchildren. The Trautman’s are members of Atascocita Lutheran Church, and have been actively involved for as long as they have lived in the area.
