Falkenberg: Zealots know no limits in abortion debate – Houston Chronicle

One of my Kingwood Area Democrats friend sent me a link to the article below. I am just catching up to a lot of my emails and read it just now.

What an excellent article. The question is why we do not see these in much larger volumes.

I was so impressed with the article I sent the author the following email:

Excellent article. I wish more of our journalist would report hard hitting issues like this in a point of fact unbiased method. The media is there to inform and to keep watch on our government. Unfortunately in Texas and many of our Conservative states the media, both print and broadcast, seem to be so timid that it has allowed citizens to support politicians that materially affect them negatively. Where were the constant display of hard hitting reporting during the Legislature’s decimation of our school funding and invasion of women’s bodies with the sonogram; very little coverage proportional to the actual effect these laws will have on Texas citizens.

I sure hope you keep writing these articles of how the government has allowed the Right to “talibanize” our politics.

Again, thanks for an excellent article.

Whenever we find well written articles on prescient issues I think it is important that we acknowledge the authors and send them a thank you to let them know support is out there. The reason the Right has been so successful in misleading and deceiving is that they are active in attacking all those that would reveal truths and challenge their deceptions and fallacies.

Falkenberg: Zealots know no limits in abortion debate

The Girl Scouts promote abortion, we’re told. Prenatal testing promotes abortion. Birth control promotes abortion.

The number of organizations and medical treatments and services disparaged in the name of abortion opposition has been growing for years. Lately, the attacks seem to know no bounds.

Sure, you can chalk up the first example about the Girl Scouts to the kooky commentary of a no-name state lawmaker in Indiana. His view that one of the nation’s most beloved organizations is in league with pro-abortion forces was quickly dismissed by his own Republican leader of Indiana’s state house, who reportedly ran out and bought more Thin Mints in protest.

But the second example comes from Rick Santorum, surging contender for the Republican presidential nomination. As part of his ongoing attack against President Barack Obama‘s health care law, Santorum is now arguing that free screenings for birth defects under the law are evidence of Obama’s pro-abortion agenda.

Santorum, who has a daughter with a serious chromosomal disorder, says that the tests encourage more women to have abortions that will "cull the ranks of the disabled in our society." It appears we’ve gone from death panels to birth panels.

Prenatal testing is commonplace, and recommended by doctors, including my own. Being nearly 8 months pregnant, I’ve had a recent experience with one such test that showed an elevated risk for a serious genetic disorder.

My husband and I were glad to have the information, and the genetic counseling that followed. Further testing showed our baby was healthy, but had that not been the case, we would have needed time to prepare, to learn all we could about how to care for our special-needs child.

Palin values tests

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has said much the same thing about the value of the tests, such as the amniocentesis that helped her prepare for her son, Trig, who was born with Down syndrome. And should parents decide they’re not able, or willing, to care for a special-needs child, that, too, is their informed choice to make.
