America- Which path will you choose?

by Russell Evans

We all get upset about people who feel entitled – those  folks who live beyond their means and then demand help when they’re in trouble. America provides its citizens the freedom to live as they choose, but nobody should have the right to get bailed out when they act irresponsibly.

Recently, I have heard many people complaining that they “deserve a break at the pump.” Sure, I like cheap energy and these are difficult times. The bad news is that the price of oil is unlikely to ever drop again. Global consumption has risen too sharply and even if we drill everywhere tomorrow, it will take years for that crude to arrive at the pumps. It bothers me that the same people who complain about gas prices never mention fuel efficiency or consider driving smaller cars. When it comes to oil, we act like spoiled children burning through an inheritance: We demand as much as we can get and then use it up as fast as we can get it.

At some point America has to come to grips with the fact that we are living beyond our means in nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether we are talking about Social Security, Medicare, or the price of gas, we have a choice. We can either blame others or look honestly at ourselves. Sometimes, we have to humbly admit that we’ve gone too far and let go of the things which we can no longer afford. While this is not often a comfortable choice, it is a choice with dignity. So America- Which path will you choose?
