This morning, the Galveston Daily News released an article (http://galvestondailynews.com/story/301202) about Galveston’s proposed plan to have paid parking on the seawall. According to the article, a Tennessee based company called Central Parking System will get 70% of the profits under the current plan, even though, they point out, the Texas General Land Office has historically objected to this type of scheme. The issue at hand, however, is that the vice president of Central Parking System is Dan Huberty, a member of the Texas Legislature from the Humble/Kingwood Area. Here is a segment from that story:
“Things are complicated for the land office, too, by the fact that state Rep. Dan Huberty, R-Humble, is a vice president in Central Parking System. No one at the land office has raised concerns to The Daily News about Huberty’s involvement in a bid to profit from a contract on a state asset. But the situation obviously is touchy because Huberty, like all state lawmakers, has authority over the land office, which has authority over the beach access issues and is vetting a bid from Huberty’s company.”
Cody Pogue, Huberty’s challenger in the 2012 election released a statement this morning saying “I think it is clear that Mr. Huberty is more concerned with his own private interests than with the issues the people of our district care about. The people of this district care about receiving a decent wage and educating their children, but has put himself into this potential conflict of interest in order to maximize his profits, even though it will essentially rob Galveston’s beaches of much needed funding. That is unacceptable. Dan Huberty is in it for himself, and Texans deserve better!”
