Do Not Fall For The Lies About Immigration And The Undocumented Immigrant; We Are All Immigrants

Thrown off guard by the President’s overwhelmingly popular immigration policy decision, right-wing figures are resorting to their old playbook on immigration as the Supreme Court prepares to issue its decision on Arizona’s anti-immigrant law. It is important that we remain vigilant to of the promotion of hate and division that will be forthcoming.

Below are many fallacies that have invaded the body politic and our everyday discourse. Each one is refuted with relevant citations. Now more than ever we need this information so we can then personalize it when speaking to our family, friends, and neighbors. Leave a comment if you have additional information.

It not true that in the aggregate illegal immigrants are taking our jobs.

The claim that Obama’s DREAM policy will take away college spots and jobs from our own kids is patently false.

After all:

Saying that states are taking action on immigration because the federal government won’t is a misrepresentation of the facts.

It inaccurate to state that illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes but they still get welfare.

One of the biggest lies is that illegal immigrants are criminals and commit more violent crimes than US citizens.

We should refrain from the term illegal. No human is illegal. Our founding fathers never called themselves illegals when claiming this land. Our unique history should make us open to fair legal immigration and a compassionate and lenient stance to those undocumented residents that came here to work, to live a decent life, crime free, and productive. While as a matter of practicality we must secure our borders, it is incumbent upon us to remember that these undocumented immigrants are doing exactly what the original immigrants to this land did.
