On May 30th, 2013 Senior Advisor Jeremy Bird, Field Organizer Adrienne Bell, Field Director Alex Steele, Sheriff Adrian Garcia, and other activists were present at the Battleground Texas voter registration kickoff. Kingwood area Democrats were present as usual with their large contingent of activists.
Jeremy Bird gave a fact based talk on the direction that Texas was headed. Given the demographics of Texas and the complete disregard by Texas Republicans of the needs of the Texas middle class, Texas is in play. Bird reiterated that turning Texas Blue is not a sprint. It is a marathon.
Field Director Alex Steele then inspired the assembled activist with his story of his very hard working parents, who inasmuch as working from daybreak to dusk, were barely making it. Only because of policies that provided a ladder to the middle class was he able to attend college. It is this opportunity that Battleground Texas wants to ensure every Texan has access to.
Sheriff Garcia then came on and spoke about the politics of Harris County and the progress made that laid the path to him becoming sheriff. He fired up the troops by his example.
Field Organizer Adrianne Bell provided the most engaging story in that she left Texas and participated in reelecting President Obama in the battleground state of Ohio. She laid out what political activism is all about. Bell said irrespective of what polls were saying; when she left Ohio she knew Obama had won it based on being on the ground all those weeks. She also inspired with her passion for the middle class cause. Bell’s motto is simple and to the point – “I don’t believe in a lot of talking. I am a doer”. If all the Battleground Texas Team Leaders, Field Organizers, & Team Members adopt her motto, the marathon may just turn into a sprint and with that a “Texas Blue 2013”.
