The Week In Obamacare

Obamacare is the law of the land. Congress is in recess and the Republican misinformation campaign is in full vogue. Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, and all those supporting the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) better join the fight. Engaging and countering Right Wing Republicans as they willfully misinform and lie is not enough. One must personalize Obamacare for every single American. One must show that failure of this program presents a clear and present danger to their health, their financial well-being, and their families.

That problem is not an abstraction invented by economists to justify trampling individual liberties. As experience in most countries around the world has confirmed, it is a profound source of market failure that renders unregulated insurance markets a catastrophically ineffective way of providing access to health care.

  The campaign against Obamacare began as a campaign for self-interest. Obamacare, conservatives promised, would raise your taxes, take away your doctor and possibly put you in front of a death panel. The fight to keep it from passing was a fight to keep bad things from happening.

  But the effort has devolved into something much weirder: A campaign of self-sacrifice. The current crop of Republican strategies ask conservative congressmen to hurt their constituents and their political prospects, conservative governors to hurt their states, and conservative activists to hurt themselves.
