This is the woman who had the chutzpa to heckle President Obama. This is the woman who remains unapologetic and assertive in her passion for social and economic justice. This is Medea Benjamin.
One would not imagine that that high but booming voice was coming from a woman so small and petite as Medea is. But that she did during the President’s National Security Press Conference. She was protesting against the United States’ policy of using drones where innocent civilians are sometimes killed alongside the terrorists.
Her sentiment and analysis in an interview at USNews.com is prescient. She says.
I think our drone policy is wrapped up in notion that our lives are more important than the lives of people in those countries. The Muslim world has been listening and watching for the last over 10 years, and seen how easy it’s been for us to dismiss their lives. Children in Pakistan… have been killed by drones. If that were American children. I think we would go to war over it. [source]
Ms. Benjamin gave the interview below at the 2nd biannual Democracy Convention in Madison Wisconsin. Liberty Tree Foundation sponsored the event where many activists and groups including Move To Amend, Code Pink, Alliance for Democracy and others provided panels of various democracy and social justice issues.
Medea sat down for an interview at the Democracy Convention. She was intent on showing her actions with Code Pink is not a fluke or based on some whim. She knows the cause. In her interview Ms. Benjamin is clear that she along with Code Pink is intent on continuing the tactics of semi-civil disobedience. It is evident from the reception she received at the Democracy Convention that the activists were in favor of her tactics and what she stood for.
