Deadly flu-like symptoms
Eight people in the Houston area have contracted a mysterious disease. The patients exhibit flu-like and pneumonia-like symptoms. Four of them have died so far. KHOU11 is reporting that
The investigation into a mysterious illness in Montgomery County is expanding as other hospitals and doctors report similar cases.
The new case files are being reviewed for similarity to the eight at Conroe Regional Medical Center that prompted a Montgomery County Health Department investigation.
Four of those eight patients died and two are still fighting for their lives.
"We don’t currently have a diagnosis for what has caused those illnesses," Montgomery County Medical Director Dr. Mark Escott said.
State and regional health departments have already been notified and are also looking for reports of new cases.
"Other health departments will need to be looking for cases like this to make sure that we haven’t missed cases," Dr. Escot said.
Wayne and Judith Law’s 50 year old daughter Gayla Marcantel was very healthy. She came down with flu-like symptoms about three weeks ago. She ended up in the ICU. Wayne and Judith Law watched their daughter swell as her body built up fluids and her organs failed. Her body could fight no more. Her parents watch helplessly as she deteriorated and died. Wayne and Judith Law said that people in the area have been contacting them with similar cases..
Below is a first hand account of a mother,Odessa Reed, who lost her 41 year old son, Dathany Reed. He left his jobs sick with flu-like symptoms one day. He went to the doctors at Conroe Regional Medical Center. Got several prescriptions and was sent home. Dathany Reed was in the emergency room on life support the next day. He was dead 5 days later.
The county is urging residents to do their part to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. It is the standard procedure, wash hands frequently; cover your cough but don’t cough into your hands; stay home if you’re sick; and get to the doctor within the first 48 hours of illness.
