Take heed to what educator, Kingwood resident, and Kingwood Area Democrat Bryan Henry is saying about our political discourse. Bryan says,

Lately the Opinion Page of the Observer has included articles by residents criticizing the expression of conservative viewpoints and lamenting the inclusion of liberal viewpoints. I find this confusing because the Opinion Page is precisely where such political viewpoints should be articulated. The Observer, by intentionally including diverse viewpoints, is performing an invaluable service for the community. What is unique and consequential about the local newspaper is that the viewpoints expressed therein are not those of pundits on Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC, but local residents. It is important for a community to understand itself, which involves a willingness to listen to your neighbors so that you can appreciate their needs, desires, and fears. Most people watch highly partisan news broadcasts and begin to form their political views within an echo chamber. Yet, communities are rarely monolithic and failure to recognize the diverse views in your midst will result in a limited, skewed view of reality. We should always compare the partisan claims of national publications with local attitudes in order to understand our community and ourselves.

Many individuals approach politics in a purely self-interested manner, but some seek to understand and implement what they perceive would be best for the community as a whole.
