Joe Biden tells Congress Democrats are in the same place with the American people.
Vice President Joe Biden attended the House Democrats retreat at a resort on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He gave an impassioned pep talk to congressional members. The following snippet is representative of the tone and the substance of his speech.
This is the first time in my career, Nancy, where on every issue the American people agree with the Democratic Party. I mean, think about it. I really mean it. I know that sounds like hyperbole. Think about it, every issue facing the American people particularly the embattled middle class. On every single issue from which you were able to do in the debt ceiling they were not about to go ahead and play games this time because of you.
Minimum wage, 72% of the American people support an increase in the minimum wage, early childhood education, 86% of the people, immigration reform, 72% of the Democrats, 60% of Republicans, background checks on weapons, 90% of the American people. Infrastructure, 88% of the American people think it’s a means by which we can grow the country. … The American people agree with us, 55% on marriage equality. Overwhelmingly believe in pay equity. And even 55% with all the difficulty you are facing with the ACA, 55% of the people don’t want to see it repealed. …
I can’t think of a time when the issues that most affect the American people, most affect the middle class, overwhelmingly support us. And I make another point to you. There isn’t a Republican Party. I wish there were. I wish there was a Republican Party. I wish there was one person I could sit across the table from. Make a deal. Make a compromise and know when you got up from that table it was done. That is what political parties; that is what Nancy is able to do. That is what the President is able to commit to. But there is no, all you have to do is look at the response of the State of the Union. What were there, three or four? I am not being facetious.
So I think we should just get focused here. … So keep your eye on the ball. Keep your eye on the ball. The American people are where we are. And let’s go out and make every single effort, not just to defend, but to aggressively push, aggressively push our agenda. They are with us. They are with us. And I am sure as hell glad I am with you.
Joe Biden is correct. It is time for Democrats to focus and not fall into the trap of fear. The values of the American people are in line with the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. Democrats must not be on the defensive. They must take the offensive on every issue including Obamacare. As Joe Biden said, the American people are where we are.
I am waiting for Democrats to make ads that are as graphic as those from the Right Wing groups funded by the Koch brothers. The only difference is they would be substantive. I am waiting for the ads that show people dying in visually grotesque forms pre-Obamacare and then having families thank the politician for fighting those that would return to the inhumane system.
Democrats need to trust that when Americans are told the truth in a manner that shows how the Democratic policies affect them in their particular district, they will vote appropriately. Americans however expect that the politician have a conviction and belief in their real values.
