James Carville gives 3 reasons why Rick Perry is his dark horse GOP nominee

James Carville Rick Perry

James Carville was on a roll on This Week. He played various contrarian positions. James Carville actually believes Rick Perry stands a chance to be the GOP nominee. He said the following.

My dark horse candidate believe it or not is Rick Perry. And I say that and I give you my reasons. First of all the Kentucky Derby is coming up. He’s been around the course once. He knows what the track is like. Secondly, he can raise a bucket load of money. He is governor of Texas. Third, unlike Scott Walker he’s got a compelling economic story to tell. Somebody from the Bush Scott Walker, I think Rick Perry would be my dark horse. And I think he’s more electable.

James Carville was challenged by Mathew Dowd. Dowd said he advocated back in 2012 that Rick Perry was the leading candidate. He implied he was burned by unfulfilled potential. James Carville shot back stating that he did not say leading candidate but dark horse. The dark horse can win when you least expect of course.

Rick Perry has been doing some triangulation similar to Rand Paul to expand his reach. He has been moving towards drug decriminalization. Rick Perry is also working on incarceration rates and prison reform with Texas Democrat John Whitmire.

“You want to talk about real conservative governance?” Perry asked. “Shut prisons down. Save that money.” The crowd applauded, but seemed surprised that they were doing so.  …

Perry, in a somewhat mischievous tone, assured the CPAC attendees that prison reform did not make him soft on crime. “Texas is is still tough on crime. Don’t come to Texas if you want to kill somebody.”  …

At CPAC, Perry talked about prison reform as an opportunity to—in a very Christian manner—forgive. “The idea that we lock people up, throw them away forever, never give them a second chance at redemption isn’t what America is about.”

Rick Perry may be in it to win it?

Who would believe this is the governor that executed so many? He just may be in it to attempt to win it. James Carville may be on to something.
