Jon Stewart finally had reason to give kudos to the media
Jon Stewart seemed shocked. The man that generally can find nothing right, good, or sensible in the news media had to give them some kudos last night.
“We are all familiar with the hyperbole of the 24 hour news cycle,” Jon Stewart said. “Breaking news we found the plane. … It’s a Styrofoam cup sorry. … But yesterday it finally lived up to the hype.”
He then showed several TV hosts using words like ‘’stunning epic upset”, “underdog victory on behalf of an underfunded newcomer”, “this is simply unprecedented”, “history making surprise”, and “David over Goliath times a thousand”.
Jon Stewart said that the media this time may actually be understating it. In other words David Brat beating House Majority leader Eric Cantor was not only unexpected but unprecedented.
Jon Stewart figuring out why Eric Cantor lost brought back media frivolity
Jon Stewart next task was to figure out the strategy used by David Brat to defeat the ‘pro-life, Obamacare defeating, president obstructing, debt ceiling default risking, tax loophole embracing, government shutdown-ing’ Eric Cantor. Stewart is implying that these are the tenets of the current Conservatives in Congress.
Jon Stewart then show various clips stating,
- Brat went after Eric Cantor for not staying true to conservative principles.
- Eric Cantor was too liberal.
Stewart had do do a double take on these. “I imagine you could say,” Jon Stewart said. “Eric Cantor was too liberal pre-enlightenment. Certainly during the Middle Ages Cantor’s views on accepting gravity would be considered dangerous. How is this guy too Liberal?”
Stewart then drops in the answers with news snippets. It said, “Immigration reform; that is the issue that Dave Brat tried to hammer Eric Cantor with in the past few months.”
It would not be long before the media would give Jon Stewart more ammunition on their frivolous nature. He first stated the fact that Lindsey Graham was more supportive of immigration reform than Eric Cantor was. Lindsey Graham won in a much more difficult race. Of course the news media began hyperventilating about immigration reform being dead, no cooperation between Republicans and Democrats, no laws getting passed, etc.
“Oh no,” John Stewart said. “Congress’ golden age of cooperation and productiveness is over.” In other words the hyperventilating over the meaning of Eric Cantor’s loss is simply more of the same.
