Chuck Schumer makes the case for keeping the Senate Democratic
Chuck Schumer appeared on Meet The Press on Sunday. Chuck Todd asked a valid question. Given the state of Washington gridlock, why does it matter if there is a 51 Democratic Senate majority or a 51 Republican Senate majority.
It would seem that gridlock will remain especially given the make up of the gerrymandered House of Representatives which is unlikely to change. Senator Chuck Schumer was ready with the answer. It is the answer that women, students, minorities, the poor, the working poor, and the middle class should heed dearly. It should have them sprinting to the polls.
“Two words, Supreme Court,” Senator Chuck Schumer said. “The money that’s cascading into our system. If the Supreme Court continues to be the way it is and there is a vacancy and they buttress that, we would be subject to these few people dominating the elections for decades to come. The Supreme Court on voting rights, makes a huge difference. The Supreme Court on women’s issues makes a huge difference. Supreme Court.”
Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) replied with a rather dishonest answer. He claimed that a Republican Senate would get stuff done by ending gridlock. Chuck Todd in rare form was taken aback, “REALLY? There is a lot of skepticism that anything will get done.” Chuck Schumer reminded Rob Portman and Chuck Todd that the dysfunction in Washington was lead by a Republican Senate and Congress that were obstructionist.
One must remember that immediately after the election of President Obama, Republicans had a meeting where they codified the methods of obstruction that would be used to stifle everyone of President Obama’s polices. This is a fact that the media rarely keeps beating on even as the Republican obstruction is constant and following the obstructionist plan designed in January of 2009.
Senator Chuck Schumer ended the interview in classic form. He laid out whatthe poor and middle class America will give up if Senate control is given to those that have stymied middle class centric policies.
“On the issues that matter most to the American people, on jobs, raising minimum wage, equal pay, stop sending jobs overseas, helping kids pay for college,” said Senator Chuck Schumer. “The Republicans have said no to each of those. That’s why we are going to win the election. And that’s why if they win there would be total gridlock.”
We get the government we elect. It is time for American to take responsibility for the government they elect and keep them accountable. Actions speak louder than words. It is now time for action. Vote!
