Conservative Rich Lowry continues insensitivity to issues of the aggrieved
Right Wing Conservative and editor of the National Review once again put his foot in his mouth. Last week he appeared on Meet the Press where he misrepresented both Michael Brown and the grand jury result where police officer Darren Wilson was no-billed for the killing of Brown. Today he demeaned every woman who have had forced and unwanted advances by men.
ThisWeek with George Stephanopoulos included a segment on Rolling Stone Magazine having to step away from parts of the allegations in their story “A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA.” Van Jones stated that the journalism error by Rolling Stone Magazine would hurt women as many may not report sexual assault or sexual abuse for the general fear of not being believed. It is a justifiable fear.
Rich Lowry took exception to statistics Van Jones laid out about one in five women being sexually harassed on campus. “That statistic is based on a survey that includes attempted forced kissing as sexual assault,” Rich Lowry fired back. “That is not a real number. … It’s not a crime that the police is going to be involved in and prosecute.”
Van Jones amusingly asked Rich Lowry if it would then be OK for him to kiss him which one could assume would be a forced kiss. Rich Lowry kind of ignored the comment. Rep. Loretta Sanchez attempted to educate Lowry but it was all going through his ‘troglodyte’ mind.
What Lowry failed to understand is that his statement about police likely not taking the issue of forced kissing of women and other types of real sexual assaults seriously, is in fact the problem. This is not a Liberal or Conservative issue. It is a ‘care about women’ issue. This is one area where Conservatives have failed miserably in their policies.
