Heather McGhee hits the nail on the head
Heather McGhee, President of Demos, appeared on the Meet the Press panel. Chuck Todd asked her if Jeb Bush did the right thing in calling out Donald Trump. Her answer did not use the limited frame in which Chuck Todd attempted to box the gender issue into. She noted that it was more than a Donald Trump issue.
“Well, I think it is important to remember that a Republican presidential nominee hasn’t won women since 1988. So this is a very deep problem with the party. It’s not going to be enough for anyone, a commentator or one of the candidates to just disavow Trumps sort of interpersonal sexist comments. Because what we know about a bias against women or anyone else is that it operates at a bunch of different levels. And you’ve got the interpersonal stuff which is sort of an easy to bat away. It makes for good commentary. But you know the Right has a problem with institutional bias against women. Look at their vision of a healthcare system that excludes reproductive care. Structural bias against women. Looking at the economy they want, low wage workers, who the majority, whom are women staying in poverty. There is a deeper deeper problem here than just these off hand comments.”
That is the women problem of the Republican Party in a nutshell. If voters voted their values and sentiments, not even gerrymandering would prevent Republicans who share the ideological tenets expressed above to be defeated in any election.
