Houston Mayor Annise Parker talks about a plan after she leaves office
When I got to the radio station, KPFT 90.1 FM, I saw the security detail outside. I knew it wasn’t just a city councilperson or a state congressperson, they do not have security details.
I parked and approached the officer. He told me he was part of the security detail for Houston Mayor Annise Parker. Damn, Queer Voices got her exit interview. Darn, I had not even thought about doing one with her on my KPFT show Politics Done Right. And now I am kicking myself.
I am the engineer for Thinkwing Radio w/Mike Honig which airs right after the show the Mayor was on. I had to be quick. I told one of her security detail that I was going to get a selfie with her and interview her real quickly and I would appreciate if he wouldn’t shoot me.
Before the interview I reminded the Mayor that she was pleasantly surprised when visiting with our Kingwood Area Democrats (KAD). There was a large number of Democrats in our very red suburb. She told me then in a tongue and cheek manner, “You mean there are Democrats in Kingwood?” Of course her subsequent visit was held in a bigger hall. Yes Mayor, KAD is turning Kingwood blue. It may take some time but we engage our neighbors and coax them to the light.
The mayor said jokingly in today’s interview that after leaving office she will enjoy sleeping past seven. Most importantly she has to relearn how to drive given that her security detail takes her everywhere. And what are her plans for the next few months? She hopes to get a teaching fellowship at Harvard.
I would have liked to get a more in depth interview with the mayor but I had to go setup the next show. Interestingly, Mike Honig asked the Mayor to stick around for a few minutes for his show and she did. I am sure the Mayor will be running for higher office pretty soon. She was very measured in her responses to Mike as her assistant looked on with a very special facial expression.
I see Lieutenant Governor or Governor in the Mayor’s future. She just has to wait for the implosion of the Texas Republican Party.
As the Mayor left, I apologized for keeping her in Mike’s grip longer than the 15 minutes. She said it was OK and then said she followed my tweets and reads my blog. Now if I could just get Governor Gregg Abbott to read it, he may decide to accept the Medicaid Expansion to Obamacare. Come on, one can dream.
