Senator Lindsey Graham continues to slam Donald Trump
Senator Lindsey Graham has been a vocal opponent of Donald Trump for some time now. He does not hide his disdain for the man to the point that he’d rather the GOP lose an election to be rid of him. Recently Graham admonished Trumps supporters.
“I want to talk to the Trump supporters for a minute,” said Lindsey Graham. “I don’t know who you are or why you like this guy. I think what you like about him, he appears to be strong while the rest of us are weak. He is a very successful businessman. He is going to make everything great. He is going to take all the problems in the world and put it in a box and make your life better. That’s what he is selling. Here is what you are buying. He is a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot. He doesn’t represent my party. He does not represent the values that the men and women in uniform are fighting for.”
More recently Lindsey Graham let it all out.
“Look, what Mr. Trump is doing is making it virtually impossible for our party to grow,” Graham said. “We are a diverse nation. That’s truly what makes America great. … I’d rather lose without him than try to win with him if he keeps doing what he is doing. There is no shame in losing an election. The shame comes when you lose your honor.”
Every Republican candidate should be speaking out like this. Why? A large number of the Republican base is acquiescing to Trump’s self-serving bigotry. One can postulate that said bigotry is innate within the base. That may be partially true. Good leaders can educate-out enough of the bigotry to make the base more tolerant and inclusive. Leading by example is still a very effective tool.
