Sylvester Turner wins

Texas State Representative Sylvester Turner won the Houston mayoral election. This was his third try. He beat Bill King in a very close election. The Houston Chronicle reports the following.

State Rep. Sylvester Turner won the Houston mayor’s race with a down-to-the-wire finish to edge businessman Bill King Saturday.

“In this room tonight you see a reflection of the city of Houston. Whether you voted for me or not as we move forward is irrelevant,” Turner told supporters after the final votes were counted and King had conceded.”As far as I’m concerned, from this day as we move forward, I will do my very, very best to represent every single Houstonian in this city, whether you voted for me or not,” he said. “Every part of this city deserves to be represented.”

Though he ultimately prevailed in Harris County, it was voters in Fort Bend that kept his lead throughout the night even as King began to close the gap.

“I love me some Fort Bend,” Turner said, before launching in to 10 minutes of thanking numerous supporters, including rivals he vanquished in the Nov. 3 general election.

As I reported a recently, the Kingwood TEA Party said that their intent was to get Bill King in the runoff. They said they would win because Turner’s voters would not show up. It seems they were very wrong.
