Would a messy Democratic National Convention be bad?
Bernie Sanders said that the Democratic National Convention will be messy, and all hell breaks loose in the media as they cover the statement ad nauseam. The reality is I want a messy convention.
Sanders is not the first politician to note that democracy is better. President Obama said that as well.
I think a messy Democratic National Convention would be a good thing if handled correctly. Write now the Democratic Party is split 50/50 between left-wing Democrats and moderate Democrats (incrementalists). Inasmuch as Hillary Clinton won more votes, pledged delegates, and superdelegates, any objective assessment leads one to conclude that having the entire Democratic Establishment anointment was instrumental in that. To be clear, Bernie knew from the beginning what he was getting into.
If Bernie Sanders simply acquiesce to the Democratic Establishment and the Clinton campaign and drop out of the race, all of the new people he brought into the fold will justifiably feel slighted. Having a real Democratic Convention where there is a strong back and forth for the platform, for a change in the way the primaries is effected, and more would be an implicit buy-in for Sanders supporters as they would really be a part of the democratic process, within the Democratic Convention. And yes, because Hillary Clinton is proving to be a very flawed candidate against likely a candidate that should be unelectable, the electability factored should at least be considered at the convention.
As long as at the end of the convention everyone believe they were heard and that most believe that the outcome of the convention is best for the party, a messy convention would not be a bad thing at all. So, folks, it is unnecessary to follow the lead of the talking heads going forward. After all, how good were they on the calls they have made thus far.
