Donald Trump is keeping the Republican Party on skids.

Is Donald Trump planning on ditching the race?

Donald Trump is destroying the Republican Party literally & figuratively. Many now believe he will bail when a win becomes a near impossibility.

Well before it was vogue, I thought Trump was merely in the race to show he could do it and would subsequently find ‘an honorable’ exit strategy. After all, no matter how pigheaded he is, there are constraints on the presidency. His mode of operation would ultimately get him impeached.

Back in June Ashley Feinberg wrote an interesting article that did not get much penetration. It is still worth reading. It is titled ‘How is Donald Trump going to quit.” The article laid out various plausible scenarios. It seems we are at one of those scenarios right now, quitting right after the convention.

ABCNews White House correspondent Jon Karl  reported Wednesday morning that Republican officials were scrambling in the event the Donald suddenly quits the presidential race. “This is absolutely unprecedented,” Karl said. “First of all, I am told RNC chairman Reince Priebus is furious, that he has had multiple discussions with Trump telling him he needs to drastically change course. But here’s the news, I am told senior officials at the party are actively exploring what would happen if Trump dropped out, how to replace him on the ballot.”

So the Republican Party is apparently contemplating a replacement for Trump in the event he quits the race. There is a mechanism, RNC Rule #9, that allows for said replacement if there is a presidential vacancy.

This is not necessarily good news for Hillary Clinton. Given the state of the race, she is beatable by many other potential Republican candidates like John Kasich, and likely Mitt Romney. Moreover, the Clinton team is ready for Trump and no one else.
