Donald Trump's 'gaffes' are by design to ignore policy and media falls for it

Donald Trump 2nd Amendment Statement

Donald Trump is again playing the media. The big story today and probably for another few days is his implied 2nd Amendment threat to Hillary Clinton. The New York Times reported it as follows.

Repeating his contention that Mrs. Clinton wanted to abolish the right to bear arms, Mr. Trump warned at a rally here that it would be “a horrible day” if Mrs. Clinton were elected and got to appoint a tiebreaking Supreme Court justice.

“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks,” Mr. Trump said, as the crowd began to boo. He quickly added: “Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”

The statement is ambiguous enough that allowing him to deny he is inciting violence. To many, it sounds like it gives 2nd Amendment fanatics a call to action if Hillary Clinton becomes president.

One must remember that in 2008, Hillary Clinton made a comment that many of President Obama supporters thought were just as offensive. Politico reported it as follows.

Hillary Clinton today cited the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign to explain why she was remaining in the race despite long odds. “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California,” Clinton told the editorial board of a South Dakota newspaper. ” I don’t understand it,” Clinton added, alluding to the calls for her to quit. ;;;

Clinton’s campaign has put out a statement in her name, apologizing for the remark. “The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Sen. Kennedy and I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation, and particularly for the Kennedy family, was in any way offensive,” she said.

There is no defense for neither Clinton’s statement then and Trump’s statement now. But I think their purposes are entirely different. Clinton was trying to justify staying in a race she had already lost. Donald Trump is playing the media.

Trump is playing chess. He is an empty suit who is treating the presidency as a trophy he will win. His supposedly carefree no holds barred approach served him well in the primaries, and he believes it will again. He will run his election his way.

This is an anti-establishment year, and the presidency is in the hands of Democrats. Three consecutive terms for a president of one party is never a sure thing. In fact, it is a rarity. The problem is that Donald Trump has little to offer the poor and the middle-class. His latest economic policy speech is trickle-down economics on steroids. It was slammed by all economists worth mentioning.

Instead of the media and Clinton surrogates making the case of the damage Trump’s policies would be on most Americans including his solid base in Appalachia and other economically marginalized white Trump supporters, 2nd Amendment rhetoric is the topic of discussion.

Donald Trump is an empty suit who hopes for a long ball. Since he is way down in the polls, a fickle populace given the right arguments and events just before the election could still make this man president.
