Pregnancy-Related Deaths Explode in Texas

Texas is now paying the price for electing politicians who placed ideology over human life. The skyrocketing pregnancy-related deaths are the outcome.

WBUR 90.0 reported the following.

Texas had the highest or nearly highest uninsured rate in the country during this period. Between 2010 and 2012, as Texas was closing some women’s health clinics, the mortality rate in that state doubled. Study authors say the spike is still hard to explain, but some other birth experts say the possible connection is troubling.

The Huffington Post writes that the rise coincided with the state slashing health care funding for women by substantial margins. Women’s health advocates blame a Republican-led state legislature that gutted Texas’ family planning funding by two-thirds—$73.6 million out of its $111.5 million was cut in 2011. That is the year when maternal deaths spiked. The legislature forced the shuttering of 80 clinics that provided birth control, cancer screenings, and other services.
