Reverend Barber appeared on AM Joy with Joy-Ann Reid and explained why Trump’s policies are bad for Blacks, Latinos, poor Whites, and more.
Reverend Barber sets the record straight
Reverend Barber necessarily schooled a black Trump apologist who is making the rounds in support of Donald Trump and his attempt to woo the black vote. Many virtually unknown black surrogates, read apologists, are circulating throughout the media trying to normalize Donald Trump’s otherwise horrendous record for people of color, marginalized people, and poor people in general. One of his apologists, Paris Dennard, appeared on AM Joy on a panel that included Barber.
Dennard attempted to give the impression that policies like school vouchers are pro-people of color. Reverend Barber did not mince his words in knocking down his multiple fallacies.
“If you look at the script he wrote, he said he wants to improve public education,” Barber said. “But then he lifts up a voucher program that does nothing but takes public money and gives it to private schools. It is not about encouraging and building up public school policy. He is not just speaking to suburban whites; he is also speaking to whites particularly in the south who for years since Strom Thurmond took the Dixiecrats to the Republican Party, have used a kind of divisive politics to suggest poor whites’ problems are because of black people. That is why he said, ‘Your communities are poor.’ That’s coded language. In other words, this is the problem in our society. And in fact, the very policies that he supports, even trickle-down economics, it would take us back to the recession of George Bush. Those policies would hurt African Americans and poor whites. And Republicans are scared of African Americans, and poor whites, and Latinos coming together in the South because if that happens, the solid South is over, and they no longer would have a stronghold on the political electorate in this country.”
Reverend Barber had much more to say. But he ended on an outstanding closing note.
“Repentance would really be in order for the day rather than him trying to run a game on the African American community,” Reverend Barber said. “You are right. We don’t want to look inside his heart. But when you look at the heart of his [Trump] policies, they are divisive, they are based on racial injustice, and they are wrong.”
