Kellyanne Conway lost her unflappability mantra today when Chuck Todd drilled her as he attempted to force her to answer for the lies told by Sean Spicer, Trump’s press secretary.
Kellyanne Conway rattled by Chuck Todd
Kellyanne Conway lost her cool and was taken off point as Chuck Todd questioned her like a journalist. She was unable to maintain her steadiness.
Chuck Todd pointed out that the presidency is about choices. He then asked the question.
“I am curious why President Trump chose yesterday to send out his press secretary,” Chuck Todd asked. “To essentially litigate a provable falsehood when it comes to a small and petty thing like inaugural crowd size.”
Kellyanne Conway immediately began her modus operandi of nonanswering and spinning. She then gave a semblance of an answer that wasn’t.
“On this matter on crowd size,” Kellyanne said. “I think it is a symbol of the unfair and incomplete treatment that this president often receives.”
Todd did not let up.
“You did not answer the question,” Todd responded. “Why did the President send out his press secretary, not just the spokesperson for Donald Trump, he also serves as the spokesperson for all of America at times. Why put him out there for the very first time, in front of that podium, to utter a provable falsehood. It is a small thing, but the first time he confronts the public it is a falsehood?”
Conway’s response was shocking.
“Chuck, I mean, if we are going to keep referring to our press secretary in those types of terms,” Conway said. “We are going to have to rethink our relationship here. I want to have a great open relationship with our press.”
She then tried to spin the story of a pool reporter who mistakenly said the MLK bust was removed from the White House. The reporter subsequently corrected his error.
It went downhill from there. Chuck Todd kept coming back and forcing the question which she never answered. When Todd finally called the hoopla over crowd size ridiculous, Conway took offense. When Todd laughed in befuddlement at one of her answers, she went ballistic and defensive.
“The way you laughed at me,” Conway said. “is actually symbolic of the way we are treated by the press.”
It will be a long four years. One hopes the mainstream media will keep up their newly rediscovered journalistic acumen. Good job today Chuck Todd.
