Conservative Republican New York Times columnist was on a tear on Meet the Press on Sunday. He excoriated Republicans for their utter disregard for their voters with a tone of admonishment.
David Brooks slams GOP for declaring war on their own
David Brooks displayed a disdain for his Republican Party that I have never seen before. He seemed disgusted by their blatant attempt to declare war on their own.
“Here is what I don’t get about what is going on this week,” David Brooks said. “We just had 2016, an election about the working class, their own voters, an election where we learned a lot of people are out of the job market. The social fabric is fraying. And the lessons, pay attention and help these people. So the Republican Party could help these people with market-based mechanisms, which I support. Do they do that? No! They have huge tax cuts for the rich. The investment income tax credit only goes to people above two-fifty. And that has been stable in all the plans they’ve come up with and thrown around. And meanwhile, they are throwing eight, ten, fifteen million people off the roles. So, it’s declaring war on their own voters. And then there is a wing of the party saying, ‘That’s too much.’ We are going to totally decimate them. So, the Republican Party has to figure out, are we going to help our voters or are we still the party, you know, that still is the party of the rich.”
Ironically, Brooks did not only excoriate his party for their callous disregard for the working class but for its inability to have government as the solution to aid people that capitalism has left behind. As more and more Republicans speak up along with the progressive resistance, Republicans will be unable to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
