Bill Maher used some numbers that forced a Republican operative to question the current state of GOP policies eventually. Watching her in effect throw her hands up in the air and concede was unexpected but inevitable. Funny.
S.E. Cupp had no choice but to concede
Bill Maher put S.E. Cupp on the spot, and she eventually ran out of the ability to defend the inconsistencies of the Republican base. The discussion started with Maher asking a rhetorical question about the Republican’s being stupid. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) pointed out that his Republican colleagues are not stupid but that they lacked courage.
Maher read a couple of results from a recent Pew Poll that gave a distinctly different impression about the GOP base. It made it quite obvious that the GOP voter is hyper-partisan, so much so that it clouds their ability to think objectively. It is that reality that allows them to be so easily deceived by their politicians.
Bill Maher pointed out that even though the economy has not changed in any meaningful way under Trump, Republicans magically believe it is doing much better. When Obama wanted to bomb Syria, only 22% of Republicans approved. Now 88% approve of Trump bombing Syria. The income tax has not changed under Trump. Yet, Republicans went from it being 39% fair to 56% fair. Democrats answers remained statistically the same.
“They are more tribal,” Bill Maher said of Republicans. “I am sorry. And they are less concerned with observable reality. That seems like, there are facts in there that say that.”
S.E. Cupp tried to pass those numbers on as hypocrisy apparent in both parties. Maher would have none of it. He decried the false equivalence that permeates the traditional mainstream media.
S.E. Cupp finally got real.
“There is hypocrisy to go around,” S.E. Cupp said. “But the hypocrisy on the Right has been incredibly disturbing and obvious. I don’t have amnesia as a Republican.”
She then said she remember when they said it was wrong to do executive orders. Cupp said she remembered when they thought that expanding the debt was no good.”
Even with that, she was resistant to moving past the false equivalence. But Maher forced the issue about Republicans being more partisan and tribal. She finally did.
“Certainly right this moment it definitely feels that way,” Cupp said.
