Donald Trump better watch his back as Republicans’ love for Mike Pence may make it easier for Republicans to impeach the president in time for the 2020 elections, and who knows, 2018?
I continue to believe that Republicans will not launch articles of impeachment against Trump for any cause, but I may be softening my view as Pence’s support grows. Mike Allen at Axios wrote the following a few hours ago.
Beyond his base voters, Trump has an even bigger potential problem looming with his base in Congress. While Republican lawmakers won’t say it publicly, it’s widely known if they could pick between President Pence and President Trump, the Vice President would win 90% of the vote among the GOP.
I am now inching in that direction given the mounting convolutions in the Russia scandal. Allen further points out that “Bill Clinton benefited from a large number of true fans and believers among elected Democrats when he survived impeachment.”
Right now Republicans fear Donald Trump’s rabid base. But as soon as that base shows any inkling of losing their cultish fanaticism it is evident they will exit the doors real fast. With Mike Pence waiting in the wings, it will likely bring the resurgence of the Right Wing without those they deemed as less than Republican.
But then Newsweek returned me to a certain sanity soon thereafter.
But even if Trump were impeached—which, in and of itself, is unlikely because Congress is controlled by Republicans—there would be a long way to go before the president was removed from office. Even if the House passed a resolution authorizing an inquiry into impeachment, two-thirds of the Senate would have to convict the president of an impeachable offense. Neither of the two U.S. presidents who were impeached, Andrew Johnson and Clinton, was actually removed from office. Richard Nixon left office before he could be impeached.
But you know what, I am happier with Trump. Pence is a very devoted and passionate Right Wing Republican and actor. Moreover, if he were to take over the presidency, it is a potential 10-year presidency. Think about that, finishes Trump’s term and gets his constitutional possible two terms.
