Tom Petty, legendary rocker is dead at the age of 66

Rocker Tom Petty has been found dead in his Malibu Home apparently of a heart attack. He was found unconscious and not breathing.

The Huffington Post reports the following.

Tom Petty, lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, has died after being found unconscious in his home, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to CBS News. He was 66.

HuffPost has reached out to Petty’s reps for comment.

Petty was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center at Santa Monica while in “full cardiac arrest” on Sunday night, and reportedly taken off life support when he was found to have “no brain activity,” according to TMZ. …

TMZ reports that Tom Petty has been taken off life support on a do not resuscitate order but has not yet died. A rep for the LAPD declined to confirm his death to HuffPost.

Petty had just played three sold-out shows at The Hollywood Bowl.

Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The group put out several hits, including “American Girl,” “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” “Breakdown,” “Listen to Her Heart” and more. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty was also a successful solo artist and sang the megahit “Freefallin’.”

Though Petty and his band debuted their first self-titled record in 1976, they continued to perform over the past four decades. Petty played his last show last Monday, performing three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th anniversary tour. The band wrote on their website that the tour included 53 shows in 24 states.
