I had to rewind the DVR to make sure I heard what I heard in real time. But Roy Moore’s attorney tried to make his client’s behavior acceptable by invoking host Ali Velshi’s “culture,” read his race. Stephanie Ruhle did not allow him to get away with it.

“If Roy Moore doesn’t remember,” Stephanie Ruhle asked. “How can he say that it is definitively false. And number two, why would he need permission from any of these girls’ mother, if they weren’t underage.”
“That’s a good question,” Moore’s attorney replied. “Culturally speaking, obviously there are differences. I looked up Ali’s background there. While that;’s awesome that you’ve got such a diverse background, it was really cool to read through, the point is this.”
Ruhle immediately jumped in in disgust.
“What does Ali’s background have to do with dating a fourteen-year-old,” Ruhle asked.
“I am not finished with the context of it,:” the attorney replied.
“Please answer,” a visibly perturbed Ruhle asked. “What does Ali Velshi’s background have to do with dating children, fourteen-year-old girls.”
“In other countries, there are arrangements through parents,” the lawyer replied. “for what we would refer to as potential marriage.”
“Ali is from Canada,” Ruhle exclaimed. “He is from Canada.”
“I understand that,” Moore’s lawyer said. “And Ali also spent time in other countries of which I have gone too. So it is not a bad thing.”
“So have I,” Ruhle interjected.
“I don’t know where you are going with this Trenton,” Ali Velshi interjected.
Sadly, the dog whistle was loud enough to reach past Washington DC. The intent was to shift the conversation in a manner that would normalize Roy Moore’s behavior. Unfortunately, the lawyer ran up against Stephanie Ruhle and Ali Velshi. And nobody gets away with anything on their show.
