Bill Maher’s show spent some time discussing the Al Franken fiasco and the Roy Moore false equivalence. Maher lambasted Democrats who are urging Franken to resign for not pointing out the differences and fighting. One of Maher’s guest later in the show had a prescient reminder for Democrats that they better heed now.

Bill Maher’s guest Max Brooks reminds Democrats what infighting can do

While discussing media segmentation and the effects it has had on our politics, author Max Brooks had a message that did not get the proper attention on the show.

“Although one thing that has not changed,” Brooks said. “Is that at least three times in my lifetime a Conservative has won the White House because the left has split wide open. Let’s not forget that in 1979, that Jimmy Carter was challenged for the presidency by Ted Kennedy for being too conservative — if you can believe that. And the middle-left and the far-left split apart and through that gap roared a B movie actor named Ronald Reagan that started a conservative revolution. So, Reagan didn’t win. We lost because we turned on each other and didn’t know how to compromise and come together.

Bernie Sanders supporters and Hillary Clinton supporters need to heed that message. It is time for these two factions to keep their eyes on the ball.

There is a statement that is often used. “When Democrats vote. Democrats win. And the reason is simple. There are more people with Democratic values than any other value set in the country. But within the Progressive movement, there are many approaches to get to the same place.

Progressives must get the most acceptable candidate in their respective primaries. After the primary elections, there must be a united front ready to support the primary winner at all cost. It will require compromise, but it must be done.
