Former NBA superstar Charles Barkley had some unkind words for his fellow Alabama citizens as he urged them to vote for Democratic Senatorial Candidate Doug Jones.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Charles Barkley said Monday the Alabama Senate special election is a time for Alabamians to “draw a line in the sand.” The former NBA star campaigned for Democratic candidate Doug Jones at his final stop on Monday evening in Birmingham. Barkley joined Netflix star Uzo Aduba and Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin to stump for the candidate. “We’ve got to stop looking like idiots to the nation,” Barkley said. Barkley, now a retired basketball player and an analyst on Inside the NBA, is no longer an Alabama resident, but joked to the crowd if he could buy a house today and vote tomorrow, he would.

On stage, Charles Barkley was very animated as he addressed a crowd of likely Doug Jones supporters. He implied that a win for Roy Moore would continue the view that Alabamians are confirming the stereotype most of the nation has of the citizens of the state of Alabama.
“There is no way possible, this guy, number one, be in an election,” said Barkley. “There is no way. I mean it is unbelievable that this guy is still in the race when people in your own party say they won’t vote for you or support you. I am begging and urging everybody to get out. Call all of your friends. We gotta, at some point we gotta stop looking like idiots to the nation.”
The state of the race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones is at best unknown. The final Fox News poll shows Doug Jones with a ten point lead. A Monmouth University survey showed a tied race. The Emerson College poll showed Moore leading by nine points. Nobody knows what the electorate will look like on Tuesday. But whether Roy Moore wins or loses, he would have defined the Republican Party, one whose president offered him a full-throated endorsement.
