My Dutch friend & former KPFT News Host harrowing experience in Africa

Gerry van Bakel was one of our local correspondents and news host at Houston’s only community real community radio station with a 100.000-watt transmitter. She was also a part of the KPFT show Open Journal. She sent me an email yesterday with her harrowing experience in Southern Africa. Luckily, because of helpful and attentive people, it turned out fine.

Gerry is very adventurous. While in Houston she did the MS 150 to Austin among other torturous rides. Gerry spent several years in Houston while her husband worked as a scientist for a major oil company. She was very generous with her time as one of our news correspondent roaming the city and doing the news at 4:00 PM.

Gerry sent a short note that while it did not say what, was clear that something traumatic had happened to her. So I stopped what I was doing and read her blog right away.

I promise happy stories will follow soon…but I need to get this out of myself system first. Experts say it helps to talk about so I just thought I should impose a bit on you. There is an English version at the bottom:

Thanks for listening.

The accident she had in Southern Africa was scary especially being in a scantly populated part of a foreign land. But she has always been a trooper and as she says, we expect to hear great news from her as she continues her adventure.

Gerry, stay safe and do not let that difficult experience deter you from all the things you are doing and want to do. This summer I got a chance to do a few “dangerous” and adventurous things I’ve wanted to do for some time and the rush makes living worth it.

Here is Gerry on Politics Done Right discussing health care. The health care problems we have in America is foreign to residents of the Netherlands.,
