Frank Schaeffer, the son of Evangelical theologian Francis Schaeffer did not mince words as he pointed out the con that is the leadership of the Evangelical movement. He is often a critic of a movement that has caused a lot of destruction throughout the world.
A recent tweet from Frank Schaeffer is salient. It is something that Evangelicals should read clearly as it is a fact that few articulate.
If there were no evangelicals Trump would not be president of the USA and nor would Jair Bolsonaro be president of Brazil. The Amazon would not be burning and the Earth would be protected. Evangelicals and their anti-science far right delusions are a threat to all life on Earth.
After slamming the con artists that comprise the movement, he described the pathology like no other.
“When you look at the present situation one thing has changed,” Schaeffer said. “The old con artists like Oral Roberts were glad just to make money, squirrel it away, steal, lie, etc. etc. Now we have Jerry Falwell Jr. And what he wants is access to power. And not just any power, white nationalist power, racist power, power that lies, power that commits adultery, power that has porn artists who have to be paid off with checks written in the Oval Office. That is the situation that we are in. So it is a step lower than the traditional evangelical white con artist grifters out there. Now it’s con artists married to a neo-fascist new Republican Party that is all about white nationalism.”
Everyone needs to read and reread Frank Schaeffer’s statement. If you are an Evangelical Christian supporting Donald Trump, his policies, and his accompanying Evangelical supporting orthodoxy, understand that you are instrumental in many of the ills not only across this country but across the world.
