She did not have to do this, but she did. MSNBC Host Katy Tur is almost ready to give birth. She decided to take family leave a bit early to ensure there was no accidental birthing on air. Katy gave more than her customary farewell. She wanted to use her good fortune as a sledgehammer to the family leave issue.

“I want to reiterate how incredibly lucky to get this time off paid for by my company to both be with my baby and to recover myself,” Katy Tur said. “I am heartened to know that in the two years since I came back from my last maternity leave, Federal employees now have 12 weeks of paid time off. That’s great news. But it is still unbelievable that the same does not apply to every single person in this country, parents and caregivers alike. Everyone.”

Katy Tur then went on to show the draconian nature of America’s inhumane policies. She points out that the United States is in the company of a small number of countries that do not afford its citizens family leave; so much for being exceptional.

So who is the bad company we are keeping? Suriname, New Guinea, and a few South Pacific islands. Exceptional we are not. But if we engage the body politic, we can demand it and achieve the policies we deserve.
