Republican Michigan State Senator Lana Theis accused Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow of grooming and sexualizing children to marginalize her for standing up against the Republicans, marginalizing the LGBTTQ community. The Republican sent out the attack in a fundraising email.

Senator McMorrow did not take kindly to the attack. She went on to the Michigan Senate floor with a piercingly brazen speech where she not only denounced the Republican Senator but the Republican orthodoxy in general.

The Senator crushed it with the opening.

“I didn’t expect to wake up yesterday to the news,” Senator Mallory McMorrow said with righteous indignation. “That the Senator from the 22nd District had overnight accused me by the name of grooming and realizing children in an email fundraising for herself. So I sat on it for a while, wondering why me? And then I realized that I am the biggest threat to your hollow hateful scheme because you can’t claim that you are targeting marginalized kids in the name of, quote,
parental rights, if another parent is standing up to say no.”’

The Senator went on to tell her story as one who worked with her deeds. She all but told the story of the biblical Pharisees, who were great at giving a false impression that they were doing God’s work when they were posing. She came from a family of doers. As her pastor scolded her mother for not being in the pew, her mother was doing good by working in a soup kitchen.

McMorrow leaned into the false CRT debate without giving an inch. She took back the legacy of MLK  from the Right as they’ve tried to use it as a wedge to prevent the teaching of our sordid racist history.

Senator McMprrow dispelled many inferences near the end of her floor speech.

“People who are different are not the reason that our roads are in bad shape after decades of disinvestment,” the Senator said. “Or that health care costs are too high, or that teachers are leaving the profession. I want every child in this state to feel seen, heard, and supported, not marginalized and targeted because they are not straight white and Christian. We cannot let hateful people to tell you otherwise to scapegoat and deflect from the fact that they are not doing anything to.”

And she scolded the GOP and vowed that people like her would stop the GOP.

“Fix the real issues That impact people’s lives,” McMorrow said. “And I know that hate will only win if people like me stand by and let it happen. So I want to be very clear right now. Call me whatever you want. I hope you brought in a few dollars. I hope it made you sleep good last night. I know who I am.

This is how Democrats must fight back. Lean into the truth and our moral authority.
