Former RNC Chair Michael Steele reminds Democrats that the GOP will kill the filibuster, nationalize the abortion ban, & impeach Biden. Dems ignore him at their peril.
Dems would do well to listen up.
Michael Steele pointed out that Democrats could change their formerly bleak fortune by competently messaging the Supreme Court’s attack on women. In the suffering they imposed on women and those who care about women, Republicans handed them a gift. The first poll post-Roe v. Wade overturn says as much. The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist National poll is probative.
- 51% of voters nationally say the Supreme Court’s decision will make them more likely to vote for a congressional candidate who would back a law that would restore the protections of Roe. 36% would definitely vote against a candidate with that intent, and 13% are unsure. Among independents, a plurality (47%) would vote for a candidate who would restore the protections of Roe. 38% of independents think they will definitely vote against such a candidate.
- Democrats (48%) currently have the advantage over the Republicans (41%) among registered voters in the congressional generic ballot question. Their advantage has slightly widened from five points (47% for the Democratic candidate and 42% for the Republican candidate) in May after the leaked draft of the Roe v. Wade decision.
Katy Tur asked Steele if he agreed with Senator Chris Ryan that Republicans would pass a federal abortion ban. His answer was to the point and colorful.
“Without a doubt or hesitation. They’ll set the marker,” Steele said. “They’ll set the marker. And if they have the House and the Senate, they absolutely would.”
Katy asked if Republicans would end the filibuster.
“Absolutely. Because it’s in their bases interest to do so,” Steele said.
Steele then exposed a weakness Democrats better get over.
“That’s the difference politically between the two parties,” Steele continued. “Republicans would go, ‘Oh, yeah, the Constitution and the filibuster or the traditions, the sanctity of the Senate.’ They’ll give a rat’s patootie about that when it is the bottom line in politics and power? And the Democrats often succumb to that feeling, that good feeling about, you know, democracy and all of that. And that’s good. That’s important. But the politics is what drives a lot of what’s happening right now in Washington and particularly in the Senate. And they’ve not shown the same level of willingness to do something. So absolutely, a national ban on abortion will be one of the first pieces of legislation. Well, probably next to impeaching Joe Biden.”
Dems, are you listening. What Michael Steele is saying is not something most Progressives have not been saying for decades. We need to fight as they do for our own. We are perceived as weak, slow-moving, and unable to change with the current times.
