Lawrence O’Donnell did not hold back in pointing out the ineptitude of Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Texas Governor’s statement after the Supreme Court took away a woman’s right to her body was probative.

June 24, 2022 | Austin, Texas | Press Release
Governor Greg Abbott today released a statement following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to protect the lives of all unborn babies in America.

“The U.S. Supreme Court correctly overturned Roe v. Wade and reinstated the right of states to protect innocent, unborn children. Texas is a pro-life state, and we have taken significant action to protect the sanctity of life. Texas has also prioritized supporting women’s healthcare and expectant mothers in need to give them the necessary resources so that they can choose life for their child. I signed laws that extended Medicaid health care coverage to six months post-partum, appropriated $345 million for women’s health programs, and invested more than $100 million toward our Alternatives to Abortion program. This critical program provides counseling, mentoring, care coordination, and material assistance, such as car seats, diapers, and housing to mothers in need.

Texas will always fight for the innocent unborn, and I will continue working with the Texas legislature and all Texans to save every child from the ravages of abortion and help our expectant mothers in need.”

The Texas abortion law, now in effect with the overturn of Roe v. Wade, means that a woman must carry a child from rape or incest to term. This note is from the Texas Tribune.

With that 49-year-old case now overturned, a trigger law will go into effect in the coming weeks that bans all abortions from the moment of fertilization, except in rare cases to save the life of a pregnant patient or prevent “substantial impairment of major bodily function.”

So what is Governor Abbott’s solution to protect women who may be raped or are victims of incest? Rolling Stone reported it as follows.

Gov. Greg Abbott boldly declared he was putting an end rape in the state. “Texas will work tirelessly to make sure that we eliminate all rapists from the streets of Texas by aggressively going out and arresting them and prosecuting them and getting them off the streets,” Abbott declared.

His promise was issued in response to a question from a reporter about Senate Bill 8, Texas’ abortion bounty law. SB 8, which also went into effect in September, and which dangles a $10,000 reward in front of anyone willing to sue a person who “aided or abetted” an abortion that took place in Texas after six weeks gestation. Unlike many early-term abortion bans extreme right-wing lawmakers have advanced in other parts of the the country, the Texas law makes no exception for rape or incest.

Lawrence O’Donnell played the clip and then pointed out the inconvenient truth. Texas is the second-most populous state. It is second only to California. Unfortunately, Texas has the highest number of rape victims. It has more rapes than California, a state that has 10 million more residents than Texas.

“The Republican policy for rape victims is to victimize them again and force them all to give birth,” Lawrence O’Donnell said. “You will not find a more grotesque lie in response to that question than Greg Abbott saying he is going to eliminate rape in the state that is number one. Texas is number one in forceable rape.”

Welcome, Governor Beto O’Rourke and Lieutenant Governor Mike Collier.
