America loves to preach and spread Democracy. Unfortunately, our acts do not ring true overseas as they see what we are becoming starting with the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court is illegitimate.
Mehdi Hasan pointed out the lopsidedness with which the Senate voted on Supreme Court justices. He revealed a study by Hamilton College Professor Philip Klinkner, a political scientist. The professor discovered that Senators who backed Clarence Thomas represented 48.6% of the US population. Those behind Amy Coney Barrett, 46.8%. Brett Kavanaugh received a measly 43.3% of the US population.
Ironically, the Liberal Justices got very large support. Justice Elena Kagan earned 66.5%. Justice Sonia Sotomayor earned 73.7% of the population. And Justice Stephen Breyer earned 90%. It is clear none of the five conservative justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade were approved by senators representing a majority of the US population. That is not democracy.
Mehdi Hasan’s closing statement was prescient.
“As these reactionaries on the court take a blowtorch to our basic rights, roll back decades of popular laws, policies, and precedents,” Hasam said. “Do you really think that the American public wasn’t going to notice? Their lack of legitimacy or popular support? I’m sorry to have to state the obvious, but Democracy cannot survive. If you have a rogue Supreme Court with no public backing.”
It is time for drastic constitutional action to mitigate this wrong. We must start by rebalancing the court. Three more justices must be added now.
