Ayman Mohyeldin exposed Greg Abbott as the monster that he is in a well-delivered piece on MSNBC. That is what journalism looks like.
Ayman Mohyeldin nails Greg Abbott.
A killer went into a home in Cleveland, Texas, with a weapon of war, an AR-15, and gunned down a family. He was purportedly drunk and upset that his neighbor asked him to stop shooting his gun in the yard. The Texas Tribune reported the following.
Gov. Greg Abbott expressed regret Monday after facing intense criticism for labeling all the victims of the Cleveland, Texas, shooting rampage as “illegal immigrants,” even though it appears at least one of them was not.
Abbott’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon that suggested unnamed “federal officials” provided mistaken information indicating that all five victims were in the country illegally. Since Abbott’s initial comment Sunday, evidence has surfaced that one of the victims was a permanent legal resident of the United States.
“We’ve since learned that at least one of the victims may have been in the United States legally,” Abbott spokesperson Renae Eze said in the statement. “We regret if the information was incorrect and detracted from the important goal of finding and arresting the criminal.”
The statement did not address criticism that Abbott’s language focused on the victims’ immigration status instead of the victims and their families, though Eze noted: “Any loss of life is a tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families who have lost a loved one.”
Abbott made the initial comment in a news release Sunday that announced a $50,000 reward for information about the shooter, who remained on the run after the Friday massacre. Authorities say 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa killed five of his neighbors, including a 9-year-old boy, with an AR-15-style rifle after one of them asked him to stop firing shots in his yard so their baby could sleep.
Abbott’s news release said the shooter was a fugitive “who is in the country illegally and killed five illegal immigrants.”
Why would Abbott decide to talk about illegals with respect to both the victims and the perpetrator? The answer is clear. He is attempting to absolve himself and the Republicans from the responsibility they have in the mass murders throughout Texas and the rest of the country. In the clip above, Ayman Mohyeldin did a great job of deconstructing how depraved Greg Abbott has been throughout the gun massacres that have happened throughout Texas.
Here is the reality. And this is something all Democrats and Progressives must articulate ad nauseam. Republicans market themselves as the party that protects the sanctity of life. When one deconstructs their policies, it is clear they are the party of death.
- As the Medicaid millions of Americans qualified for during the pandemic expires, millions of Texans will lose their healthcare and die because the Republican Texas Legislature, even as they are in session now, refuses to accept the Medicaid Expansion to the Affordable Care Act, which is paid for, less 10%. NOTE: Texas has a $33 Billion surplus in its budget.
- Virtually anyone who wants a gun in Texas can get one of any kind, including weapons of war like the AR-15. And because Texas does not have any real waiting period for buying a gun, because they refuse to raise the age for gun ownership, and because they refuse red flag gun laws, people continue to die. Road rage, an angry spouse, sibling, or child, a drunk unhinged person, and many other causes that may have ended with a few punches or an argument ends in the finality of death.
One can show where policy after policy by Republicans is deadly. Even the abortion policy that they claim is to protect a fetus; potentially kills women who must have the procedure done.
Greg Abbott and his cabal are monsters. And it is time for Americans to drop their ideology and vote for those who will create policy that will save and maintain life.
