Thank you, Marjorie Taylor Greene, for your attack on Rep. Jamaal Bowman, which illustrated what many in the BIPOC community constantly state about the criminalization of their being.
Majorie Taylor Greene claims she is threatened by Rep. Jamaal Bowman.
Majorie Taylor Greene (MTG) did a great job of corroborating what BIPOCs have been saying for a very long time. Too many have made just being in “non-white skin” a risk to continue living.
MTG and Jamaal Bowman had a heated but playful discussion at the capitol. Bowman did not touch her even when she was right up in his face. It is like she wanted to edge him into making physical contact. It was not much different than when Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie got into Bowman’s face as he was giving an impromptu speech in the halls of Congress castigating Republicans for doing nothing about gun violence.
What MTG said afterward at a press conference was what infuriated Bowman.
“Yelling, shouting, raising his voice — he has aggressive,” MTG said. “His physical mannerisms are aggressive. And I am concerned about; I feel threatened by him.”
But the thing is, we have the video. And it does not conform to her statement.
“You can see clearly in the video that we were like playfully jousting with each other,” Jamaal Bowman said. “She was laughing. I was laughing. We were talking about each other’s party and certain issues. So the demeanor, the disposition, you know, on the surface, it was playful. We were going after each other. So for her the next morning to say what she said, I mean, it’s a complete one-eighty number one. It’s no longer comical now because now you are using historical racist tropes toward black men. ‘Menacing his mannerisms, I’m afraid.’ That’s the stuff that got Trayvon Martin killed — Tamir Rice killed — Michael Brown killed. I believe Officer Darren literally talked about his presence and his strength as an excuse for killing him. And this has happened to black men historically. And so now we’re in a dangerous space. And that’s why I wanted to be really, really clear to reporters today how reckless and dangerous her statements were. And she should know better. I believe she knows better.”
Bowman said he is owed an apology. And she must do it publicly.
Please watch the entire video with my thoughts as to the danger of what she did.
