The Republican Texas Legislature has become the American Taliban in its governing style.

The Republican Texas Legislature has become the American Taliban in its governing style.

The State Rep., James Talarico, used his Christian bona fides to call out purported Republican Christians for the idolatry of their ideology. His interview with MSNBC’s Alex Wagner was telling.

The Republican Talibanization of Texas?

State Rep., James Talarico, challenged Republicans in the Texas State Legislature on their terms. He used their Christianity against them. They were attempting to force every school in Texas to display the Ten Commandments in a conspicuous space.

“I say this to you as a Christian representative,” Rep. Talarico said to a member of the committee. “I know you’re a devout Christian, and so am I. This bill, to me, is not only unconstitutional, it’s not only un-American. I think it is also deeply un-Christian.”

Alex Wagner pointed out that there are over 1600 or so bills around the country attempting to pass laws that break the separation of church and state doctrine America has had from its inception. Why are they doing it?

“They’re trying to indoctrinate,” the Representative said. “They’re trying to impose their version of Christianity on 5.5 million Texas public school students. And it should be offensive to all of us, those of us who love the Constitution, those of us who love democracy, and particularly those of us who are Christians.”

It is hard to believe this is where Texas and the other Red States are in 2023. We must stay activated and elect those who have been on the sidelines.
