The Southern Baptist Convention expelled two churches because they had women pastors. How is that different than the Taliban?
The Southern Baptist Convention, the Taliban.
It was hard to believe that in 2023 any organization would overtly convey a message that women are less than. That is exactly what the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has done. They decided to expel two churches that had female pastors as part of their leadership.
The SBC, one of our country’s largest Protestant denominations, has moved to bar women from holding leadership roles in its churches.
Recently the organization voted overwhelmingly to finalize the expulsion of two of its churches for having female pastors. Saddleback Church in Southern California and Fern Creek Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, were overwhelmingly voted out of the organization by north of 85% of its members.
Rick Warren, the retired founding pastor of Saddleback, one of the biggest and most prominent churches in the country, tried making a case for unity to those attending the annual meeting in New Orleans by focusing on the faith’s message. As mentioned, it is clear the body’s mind was made up as the vote was not even close.
