Clearly, Chris Christie gets the debate pledge politics. It is Trump’s Republican Party, and as such, he needs to use the accepted Trump ethics to engage. He will lie to get into the debate.
Chris Christie does a Trump.
Jake Tapper played a clip from former Congressman Will Hurd where he stated he would not lie on the pledge to support the nominee to make it to the Republican debate stage. Given who leads the Republican Party, I find that naive. It is the equivalent of bringing a knife to a gunfight. It is clear Chris Christie saw it that way as well.
“Well, I won’t see Will Hurd on the debate stage,” Christie said. “And that’s okay by me. The fact is, we’ve got to change our party, Jake, and change our country. And we had these debate pledges eight years ago, as you’ll recall, and all of us signed them. And then, when we got on the debate stage, and we were asked to reaffirm it, Donald Trump refused to raise his hands—the only one of ten candidates who did. The fact is he has set the precedent here. And I will sign the debate pledge, and I will take it every bit as seriously as he did in 2016.”
It is clear Christie will bring a canon to the gunfight. The only thing that Donald Trump cowers from is strength, as his braggadocio is but a facade. Sadly, the cowards in the Republican Party fail to see that Trump is but a mentally frail and defective lunatic.
