In early 2021, Democrats enacted the American Rescue Plan, a nearly $2 trillion stimulus that included a significant child tax credit expansion. This legislation meant that families earning under $80,000 would receive up to $300 per child per month, a policy not supported by a single Republican. This resulted in the child poverty rate decreasing to an all-time low of just over 5%. It has since more than doubled with the failure of inhumane politicians to extend support for children.
The child poverty rate surged when Democratic Senator Joe Manchin withdrew his support for the expanded child tax credit, and no Republicans voted for its continuation. This left the Democrats with no choice but to let the plan expire, resulting in the child poverty rate returning to its previous high levels.
