Ted Lieu did his best to show the general audience that he could use the sham judiciary hearing to provide a substantive Jan 6th message.
Rep. Ted Lieu did not disappoint.
During a judiciary hearing that was ostensibly about scrutinizing the actions of Merrick Garland, the U.S. Attorney General, Representative Ted Lieu shifted focus to the events of January 6, emphasizing the role of Donald Trump as a significant instigator behind the attacks. Lieu underscored the vast number of indictments and convictions orchestrated under the Justice Department concerning the January 6 insurrectionists, highlighting the justice served.
Representative Lieu played a video during the hearing, taking up 40% of his time slot, to remind Americans of the violent event that took place on January 6, emphasizing the criminal actions taken by supporters of Donald Trump on that day to prevent Congress from certifying the election results. Following this, he used the remainder of his time to point out the individuals and groups significantly involved, stating that they were there on behalf of Donald Trump, acting on his encouragement.
The congressman debunked several conspiracy theories circulating among right-wing media and some Republican members of Congress, which downplay the severity of the January 6 events or falsely involve the FBI in orchestrating the attack. He affirmed the use of weapons during the attack and confronted Garland with specific cases that have concluded with sentencings, namely individuals Joe Biggs, Stuart Rhodes, and Enrique Tarrio, highlighting their affiliations with extremist groups and their motivations aligned with supporting Donald Trump.
Lieu asserted that individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 attack were not FBI agents, as some conspiracy theories have suggested, but were predominantly affiliated with far-right extremist groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers. By focusing on notable convictions such as those of Joe Biggs, sentenced to 17 years; Stuart Rhodes, sentenced to 18 years; and Enrique Tarrio, sentenced to 22 years, Lieu emphasized the gravity of the crimes committed and dismissed the notion that these individuals had any official connection to government agencies.
Lieu thanked Garland for the Department of Justice’s efforts in prosecuting those responsible for the attacks and emphasized the importance of accurately recording the history surrounding the January 6 events. He made it clear history will document the genuine reasons behind the attackers’ actions, which were fundamentally tied to Donald Trump’s exhortations.
