Too often, Republicans like Sen. J.D. Vance appear on network news programs to spin lies and misinformation. Dana Bash made it clear that it was Trump who met with antisemitic Nick Fuentes.

CNN’s State of the Union host Dana Bash challenged JD Vance‘s defense of former President Trump and his inference that President Biden is anti-Semitic. Vance tried to paint Trump and the Republicans as supporters of Jewish citizens and Israel.
The above narrative couldn’t be further from the truth. Anti-Semitism is predominantly found within the Republican base, with instances of neo-Nazis and white supremacists openly expressing their hatred towards Jews. Some even marched on the streets chanting, “Jews will not replace us,” with the support of the former president. It is disheartening that interview hosts often fail to challenge these misleading statements, but at least Bash pushed back to some extent.
Bash questioned Vance on the historical context of putting Israel first and not prioritizing American citizens as he defended Trump’s statement that Jews would be crazy to vote for Democrats. She highlighted that the notion has been used as an anti-Semitic trope in the past. Vance, however, defended Trump’s directness and denied any singling out of Jewish Americans, stating that Trump targeted various groups who voted for Biden. He argued that both Jewish and non-Jewish Americans care about Israel and the protests against anti-Semitism. He even mentioned a non-Jewish friend whose brother had a graduation ceremony canceled due to these protests. Vance believed that Trump’s remarks about Jews should not be seen as excluding other American citizens.
Bash further pressed Vance on Trump’s comments, specifically when he said that any Jewish person who voted for Biden should be ashamed of themselves. Vance attempted to divert the conversation and defend Trump’s overall conduct, claiming that Trump cannot be labeled as anti-Semitic. Bash reminded Vance of Trump’s dinner with Nick Fuentes, an avowed anti-Semite. Vance insinuated that Biden’s actions were more concerning than Trump’s anti-Semitism.
However, it is crucial to note the hypocrisy in this argument. While Trump and his supporters try to paint Biden’s actions as anti-Semitic, they conveniently ignore the fact that Trump held back bombs that would have killed innocent Palestinians. They defend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who can only be considered a murdering war criminal. They accuse Biden of being anti-Semitic for doing the right and humane thing.
The reality is that Israel is protected by an Iron Dome, largely funded by the United States, while the Palestinian people suffer. Netanyahu’s actions have caused immense harm to Gaza, yet in cities like Tel Aviv, life seems unaffected. The stark contrast between the destruction inflicted upon Palestinians and the normalcy enjoyed by Israelis is a clear indication of the power dynamics at play.
