Rachel Maddow: Sanders’ biggest challenge: voter turnout
Rachel Maddow is absolutely right. If you are a Bernie Sanders supporter or a Democrat, you should be very worried. The current Democratic turnout compared to 2008 is much too low to create a wave election let alone a create a revolution.
Bernie Sanders message resonates with just about everybody. Americans want Medicare for all, single-payer healthcare. Americans want affordable/tuition free public education. Americans want a living wage, higher minimum wage. Americans want election reform. Yet, where it counts, making the effort to go to vote is not currently happening in the necessary numbers. You cannot get changes if you are not willing to make the effort to elect those who are attempting to get those changes effected for you.
Donald Trump and the raucous Republican Primary are expanding the Republican base. That expansion is dangerous as it is built on anger, hate, and no solutions.
The Democratic Party, by implicitly anointing a chosen one instead of encouraging a dynamic primary process, has been partially responsible for the decline. Democrats may pay a heavy price for this choice if Bernie Sanders loses and his followers throw their hands up and Hillary Clinton is unable to encourage those drowning in apathy to engage.
