That Judge Sonia Sotomayor is forced to explain and to some extent minimize the meaning of her “wise latina” statement is shameful. It is time that we accept that people with different experiences can have different interpretations of the same law and those given interpretations can be better or worse given one’s life experience. What other reason would necessitate having 9 justices as opposed to one. It is for that reason a more representative Supreme Court is a must. Not to give any one a group some advantage but to prevent any one group a superior advantage gotten by a homogenous Supreme Court. Many ills of this nation would long have been corrected if the courts were representative. Conservative Senators so falsely concerned with Judge Sotomayor’s statements themselves have a checkered past when related to prejudice.
